The Denver legal community hosts several diversity events each year that provide networking opportunities for law students, attorneys, judges, and legal professionals, as well as events that recognize individuals and organizations for their work in legal diversity and inclusiveness.

 

2009 Annual Diversity Awards 

The Diversity in the Legal Profession Committee of the CBA & DBA (DILP) announced the winners of the 2009 Qwest Diversity Leadership and Qwest Diversity Trailblazer Awards at the annual Commitment to Workplace Diversity Reception in September. The annual awards are named for Qwest because it provided significant funding and support for the 2007 Diversity Summit, when the awards were first created.

Chief Judge Wiley Daniel, U.S. District Court,  was selected for the 2009 Qwest Diversity Trailblazer Individual of the Year Award which honors a Colorado attorney who has made meaningful and significant efforts to advance diversity within his or her organization and/or the legal profession.  

The City Attorney's Office was selected for the 2009 Qwest Diversity Leadership Award which recognizes a  legal organization that is a leader in diversity and demonstrating a commitment to diversity within their organization through measurable results in recruiting, retaining and promoting diverse attorneys. 

2008 Annual Diversity Awards  

CCIE Board Chair Dean Heizer was selected for the 2008 Qwest Diversity Trailblazer Individual of the Year Award, while Qwest's Legal Department was selected for the 2008 Qwest Diversity Leadership Award.

The Sam Cary Bar Association annual "Ben Aisenberg Diversity Leadership Award" winners were announced at its annual gala on October 18, 2008.  CCIE Executive Director Kathleen Nalty and CCIE Board Secretary Patty Powell were selected for their work in diversity and inclusiveness through the nonprofit.

CCIE was selected as one of the 2008 “Top Ten Newsmakers” in Law by the Denver Business Journal.

Diverse First Year Law Students Welcomed 

The  Pipeline Working Group and the law firm of Reilly Pozner LLP hosted a reception on August 18th to welcome diverse 1Ls from CU and DU Law Schools.  CU Law Dean David Getches and DU Law Dean Beto Juárez spoke to the students about the Denver legal community's tremendous support for diversity through CCIE, the Deans' Diversity Council, and many other programs. CLEO Students at DU Law School

Forty-one diverse college graduates planning to attend law schools around the country in the fall of 2008 attended CLEO (Council for Legal Education Opportunity- an ABA-sponsored program) at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law School this summer.  DU hosted the CLEO program in part to honor the memory of Dean Robert Yegge, who started a program 40 years ago at DU Law School that was a precursor of CLEO.  The Denver legal community hosted several events for the students this summer, providing them with insight into types of practice as well as informal mentoring by attorneys and judges.  Thanks to the following judges, organizations and groups:  Sam Cary Bar, Asian Pacific American Bar, Diversity in the Legal Profession Committee, Colorado Hispanic Bar, Davis Graham & Stubbs, Faegre & Benson, Denver Area Legal Recruitment Association, Wheeler Trigg Kennedy, Qwest Legal Department, Patten Boggs, Kutak Rock, Chief U.S. District Judge Wiley Daniel, U.S. Magistrate Judge Craig Shaffer, Denver District Court Judges Christina Habas and Larry Naves, Colorado Court of Appeals Judge Gilbert Roman, Colorado Supreme Court Judge Alex Martinez, Dorsey & Whitney, and the Colorado Pledge to Diversity Legal Group. The University of Denver received a Diversity Pioneer Award from CLEO in October 2008 in recognition of its efforts to increase diversity in the legal profession.
