The Colorado Campaign for Inclusive Excellence is a new nonprofit organization formed by the Deans’ Diversity Council (DDC).  The DDC was created by Dean Beto Juarez of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and Dean David Getches of the University of Colorado Law School in the fall of 2006 to bring together the leaders of the legal community to address the challenges legal employers face in recruiting and retaining diverse lawyers.  The Campaign will educate the legal community on how to create cultures of inclusion where attorneys of all backgrounds succeed without regard to gender, race, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation.

Kathleen Nalty received her B.A. from the University of Denver and her J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School. Kathleen started her legal career as a law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge John L. Kane, Jr. In 1986, she became a federal prosecutor in the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. She prosecuted cases involving hate crimes, police brutality, and slavery. In 1990, she returned to Colorado with her husband, Craig Shaffer, who is now a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Denver. Kathleen was a founding member of the Colorado Lawyers Committee’s Hate Violence Task Force and helped create the mock trial program and curriculum. Most recently, she worked for the University of Denver Sturm College of Law as a Consultant in the Career Development Office where she specialized in assisting employers and students with diversity programs and initiatives. While at D.U., Kathleen founded the annual Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair with the Denver law firm of Davis, Graham & Stubbs LLP. Kathleen has also served as Co-Chair of the CBA Diversity in the Legal Profession Committee and was a Co-Chair of the 2007 Rocky Mountain Legal Diversity Summit in Denver.
